Dennis Dixon Shaw, 90, died on Saturday, January 11, 2025. Born June 20, 1934, in Sewickley, PA, he was the son of the late Robert and Elizabeth Dixon Shaw. He graduated from Sewickley High School and was a member of the Sewickley Baptist Church. Dennis excelled in all sports, had a strong pitching arm and was a prospect for major league baseball but was detoured by the Korean War. Dennis served four years in the Marines (Sgt, 3rd Marines Division Korea) and was a Tank Commander. After his time of military service, he returned home and became very active in his church and was instrumental to the minister of the church. He used his talent for music, having a beautiful tenor voice, singing solos and blessing people.
He is survived by two sons from a previous marriage, Dennis Shaw, Jr of Frisco, TX and Scott A. Shaw of Augusta, GA.
In 1972, Dennis married Jane Elisabeth Hittie Purvis and brought forth to the marriage four children, Karen J. Fischer of Butler PA, Roger T. Purvis of Morgantown, WV, Richard A. Purvis of Harriman, TN and John M. Purvis of Cheraw, SC, 11 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
Dennis was preceded in death by his parents listed above and a son, James Shaw.
Dennis and Jane moved to Cheraw, SC in 2002 and became members of Cheraw First Baptist Church. Dennis sang in the choir and loved his Sunday School Class. He worked at Cheraw Country Club from day one until they closed. He had many friends from the club and was a very loyal worker in everything he did.
During the 1970’s, 50 different countries came together to form the World Golf Tournament, with a different country hosting the event yearly. Players had to qualify to represent their home country for the event. Dennis and his partner won the qualifier 3 separate times. Playing in Auckland, New Zealand, they brought the championship trophy home to the United States. Again in 1976, they repeated their victory in St Andrews, Scotland, and a 3rd championship was won in 1978 in New Guinea. His wife was able to accompany him in Papua, by way of Los Angeles, Hawaii, Sydney, Port Moresby and finally into the jungles of New Guinea. A well-deserved honor for Dennis.
We know Dennis is now resting in the arms of his Savior and Lord. Praise the Name of Jesus, Alleluia to the Lamb.
