Eleanor Sompayrac Anderson of Matthews Glen, Matthews NC passed away on April 21, 2023
at the age of 94
She was born on November 2, 1928, in Washington, DC and raised in Society Hill, SC
by her grandparents, Emma Carrigan and Augustus Sompayrac.
She was predeceased by her parents, grandparents, sister Wilma and beloved husband Jack.
She is survived by three sons, Jay of Denver, NC, Todd (Ira) of Berlin Germany, David (Joy) of Matthews, NC, seven grandchildren Reynolds, Jennifer, Jessica, Carla, John, Allison, and Alex, and eight great grandchildren, niece Terry Jones, nephew John Blackmon and a Cousin Ann Sompayrac Anderson.
She graduated from St David’s Academy as a valedictorian and entered Furman University as a freshman at the age of 16. She was soon elected as class president and became a part of the student government. She was a staff member of the newspaper and involved in all phases of student life. She was a member of NCAE and Delta Kappa Gamma. After graduation, she married Jack Anderson. They lived in Columbia, Florence, and Charlotte where they raised their family.
She taught English, Creative Writing, and Business at Quail Hollow Middle School until her retirement. After retirement they enjoyed traveling to Europe and Asia and most of the states in the USA. She has been a member at Providence United Methodist Church for over 60 years and a member of Contemporary Woman’s Class and Circle 7 leader for five years.
After the loss of her husband Eleanor moved to Matthews Glen where she made friends, she called her “new family”. She will be remembered for her friendliness, her love of music, writing, taking long walks, her zest for learning, and her love of family and friends.
A celebration of Eleanor’s life will be held at Matthews Glenn, Matthews NC on Saturday, May 6th at 11:00 AM. The reception will follow in the Matthews Glen Atrium.
Burial will be held at St David’s Historical Cemetery in Cheraw, SC on Thursday, May 25th at 1:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be offered to the Sompayrac organ fund at Welch Neck Baptist Church, 112 Church St. Society Hill, SC 29593 or to St David’s Historic Cemetery98 2nd Street.
