James Herbert Tilley

Cheraw, SC

James Herbert Tilley, 85, died on Tuesday, December 12, 2023.  Born, January 29, 1938, in Cheraw, SC, he was the son of the late Herbert A. and Bertha Chapman Tilley. James served his country proudly in the South Carolina National Guard and in the Army Reserves. He also served as a Magistrate Judge from 1983 until 2004 and a Municipal Court Judge from 1994 until 2004, retiring with 24 years of service.  Mr. Tilley was a member of Wallace Baptist Church, where he served as the Bible Study Teacher, Choir Director, a Deacon, and the Baptist Men Trustee.  James was a past president of the Kiwanis Club, was a Boy Scout, and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Along with his parents, listed above, James was preceded in death by his loving wife, Helen Steen Tilley.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his daughter, Viki Tilley of Cheraw, SC; sisters, Linda Adams of Maiden, NC, and Faye Terry Banta of Lexington, KY; a granddaughter, Ashley Rivers of Cheraw, SC; and a great-granddaughter, Violet Warren.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. on Friday, December 15, 2023 at Kiser Funeral Home.
